Welcome to the 2018/2019 School Year!

Hello Monterey Music Families,

Welcome to my blog space where I'll post updates on the music program at Monterey. We've had a very busy, but excellent start to the year so far! It's been wonderful to get to know all of our new students!

We have a new teacher working with us this year! I'd like to welcome Michelle Dyler to Monterey. She's joining us as our Choir teacher on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. She's a wonderful asset to our school! If you need to reach her, you can email her at mdyler@sd61.bc.ca.

Here are some important things to know about:

Fundraising

We have a few fundraising opportunities coming up quickly! These funds are usually used for our Grade 7 and 8 trip we take every year. The cost of the trip is usually around $475 per student. These opportunities are:

Red Barn Market cards - Buy cards for the Red Barn Market and 10% will go into your child's fundraising account. First due date Friday, October 19th

Fernwood Coffee - Buy bags of Fernwood Coffee beans and $5 from each bag goes into your child's fundraising account. First due date Thursday, October 18th

Both of these order forms can be found on the MMPA page on this site, or here: http://montereymsmusic.wixsite.com/mmsmusic/mmpa

Purdy's Chocolate - We'll have order forms out soon for our annual chocolate fundraiser! Get your chocolate shopping lists ready!

Uniforms

I'll be sending home ordering information for our uniform shirts. New families, this is a black polo shirt with the Monterey Music logo on it. Every student needs one for performances. They are approximately $25 each.

The rest of the uniform is to wear black on the bottom. Pants/leggings/skirts/shorts are all ok as long as they are completely black. Black socks and shoes as well please! The fist time they need their uniforms is our Winter Concert in December, so get those uniforms sorted soon!

Winter Concert

Our first performance for the entire music department will be on Wedneday, December 12th. It will start at 7pm sharp, students arrive at 6:30, and every ensemble plays! Mark your calendars!

Remembrance Day

Our Grade 8 Band and Choir will be performing at our Remembrance Day Assembly on Friday, November 9th. Please make sure your child has their instruments and uniforms that day.

Practice Records

Next week we'll start with practice records. I'll send a form home to explain how they'll be done, and when they are due. Please help your child find a regular time in their schedule to practice. Doing it at the same time every week helps with consistency!

If you need some encouragement while you're listening to the melodious sounds of young musicians, here's a really interesting (and quick) video about the benefits of music education:

Thank-you everyone! If you have any questions, please let me know! I can be reached at khaas@sd61.bc.ca
